SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Nuclear Risk in a Changing World with Page Stoutland
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: THIS EVENT IS POSTPONED\, RESCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY\, MAY 12. \nWe welcome Page Stoutland\, former consultant\, NTI  \n  \nThe risk of nuclear weapon use is widely viewed as higher today than at any point since the Cold War. Long-standing security alliances appear to be weakening\, prompting additional states to consider developing their own nuclear capabilities. Weapons-usable nuclear materials remain in many countries\, presenting proliferation and security risks. Emerging technologies—including artificial intelligence and increasingly digital command-and-control systems—are being integrated into nuclear systems\, introducing new vulnerabilities including cyber threats and system manipulation. These converging pressures raise a critical question: are we approaching a “perfect storm” that increases the likelihood of catastrophic nuclear weapons use? \n  \nA reception for this event will take place from 5:15 – 6pm. Join us and meet other community members interested in the world. \n  \nLocation and Parking \nThe program will take place at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum (303 Pearl St NW\, Grand Rapids\, MI 49504). \nFree parking is available. \nTickets \nThe event is free and open to the public and registration and/or tickets are not required to attend in person. \nVideo recordings of all programs will be posted on our YouTube channel\, click here. \n  \nOur Supporters \nMore information on the Foreign Policy Association Special thanks to the Gerald R. SUMMARY:Fostering a Fourth Democratic Wave: Countering the Authoritarian Threat with Hardy Merriman
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Hardy Merriman\,  former President of the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict (ICNC) \n  \nA powerful autocratic wave is sweeping the globe. According to various measures\, authoritarian governments have risen and democracies have declined worldwide over the past two decades. To ensure long-term peace\, security\, and human rights for billions of people\, it is critical that this trend be reversed. But what will it take to foster a new democratic wave? \nCutting edge research and historical analysis find that one of the most powerful forces driving democratic transitions are populations living under authoritarian rule. Engaging with those populations—whether through foreign policy or independently as members of civil society—and supporting their struggles for human rights and democracy is a major opportunity to turn the tide. Join us as we welcome Hardy Merriman\, former president of the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict (ICNC)\, to lead our conversation on strengthening democratic resiliency. \n  \nA reception for this event will take place from 5:15 – 6pm. Join us and meet other community members interested in the world. \n  \nLocation and Parking \nThe program will take place at the Gerald R. SUMMARY:Decolonizing African Agriculture: Food\, Security\, & the Need for Radical Transformation with Bill Moseley
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Bill Moseley\, Dewitt Wallace Professor of Geography\, Macalester College  \n  \nThis presentation examines the evolution of food security and agricultural development in post-colonial Africa and outlines a more sustainable path forward. Challenging the long-held assumption that increased production alone can end hunger\, it argues for rethinking agriculture as a valued livelihood rather than merely a step toward industrialization. Using case studies from Mali\, Burkina Faso\, South Africa\, and Botswana\, Dr. Moseley highlights successful alternatives and explores how new institutions and policies can support resilient food systems\, greater local control\, and improved access to food for the most vulnerable. Join us for this intriguing conversation. \n  \nLocation and Parking \nThe program will take place at the Gerald R. As a result\, many people are now questioning whether the current international system still works as well as it once did. Join Dr. Westra as he maps out the history of our international system and where we go from here. \n  \nA reception for this event will take place from 5:15 – 6pm. SUMMARY:Identity and Belonging in Xi Jinping's China with Emily Feng
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Emily Feng\, NPR International Correspondent. \n  \nIn today’s China\, questions of identity are no longer private. They are political\, enforced\, and deeply personal. This talk explores contemporary China through lived experience\, drawing on NPR correspondent Emily Feng’s reporting and her new book on identity and belonging under Xi Jinping. Blending analysis with vivid personal stories\, it examines how politics and ideology shape everyday life for people from diverse ethnic\, religious\, and cultural backgrounds. The discussion highlights the tension between China’s social diversity and the state’s increasingly narrow vision of national identity\, as well as how individuals navigate pressure to conform. It also addresses the challenges of reporting from inside China today and explains why human-centered narratives are essential for understanding the country beyond headlines and geopolitics. Join us for an intriguing discussion on the role of identity in political conformity and resistance in China today. \n  \nA reception for this event will take place from 5:15 – 6pm. Jon M. Huntsman\, Jr. (2020); General (ret.) James N. Mattis (2021);  Ambassador (ret.) Marie Yovanovitch (2022); U.N. World Food Programme Director David M. Beasley (2023); and Ambassador Bridget Brink (2024). \n  \nThe recipient of the 2025 Vandenberg Prize is Nicholas Burns\, former U.S. Ambassador to China (2021-2025). Ambassador Burns served as U.S. Ambassador to China (2021-2025)\, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs (2005-2008)\, U.S. Ambassador to NATO (2001-2005)\, and U.S. Ambassador to Greece (1997-2001). He is a graduate of Boston College and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. \nAmbassador Nicholas Burns served as U.S. Ambassador to China from 2021 to 2025\, helping to shape the increasingly important and complex bilateral relationship with China. Prior to his work in China\, Ambassador Burns was a Senior Counselor at The Cohen Group for 12 years following an extraordinary career in the U.S. Foreign Service. His expertise in diplomacy and national security extends to every region of the world. \nAmong the many other highlights of his three-decade diplomatic career\, Ambassador Burns served as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs from 2005–2008\, US Ambassador to NATO from 2001–2005\, and U.S. Ambassador to Greece from 1997–2001. He was the Department of State Spokesperson from 1995–1997 and served on the National Security Council from 1990–1995\, including as Special Assistant to President Clinton and Senior Director for Russia\, Ukraine\, and Eurasia Affairs\, as well as Director for Soviet Affairs in the administration of President George H.W. Bush. Additionally\, he served in the American Consulate General in Jerusalem from 1985–1987 and at the U.S. Embassy in Egypt from 1983–1985. \nAmbassador Burns will also resume his role as the Roy and Barbara Goodman Family Professor of Diplomacy and International Relations at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He is also Director of the Aspen Strategy Group and serves on the board of several non-profit organizations\, including the Council on Foreign Relations\, Special Olympics\, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund\, and the Atlantic Council. \nRaised in Wellesley\, Massachusetts\, Ambassador Burns has a BA in History from Boston College\, from which he graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1978. He earned his MA in International Relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in 1980. \nThanks to longtime World Affairs Council corporate supporters Amway and Bank of America for sponsoring this event. \nHe will receive the Vandenberg Prize on Tuesday\, June 18th\, from 12:00-1:45\, at the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. The Vandenberg Prize is named after Michigan Senator Arthur Vandenberg (1881-1951) who was the inspiration for founding the Council in 1949 by Grand Rapids attorney (and later Federal Judge) Douglas Hillman and businessman Edgar Orr. \nIn addition\, the Council will present the annual Hillman-Orr Award to a West Michigan individual or institution that mirrors the intent of the Council’s founding leaders to bring global awareness and international understanding to the West Michigan community. \nHillman and Orr were inspired by the life and work of Senator Vandenberg\, an isolationist who became a strong advocate of internationalism in the wake of World War II. Vandenberg forged bipartisan support for the Marshall Plan and NATO and was appointed one of the first U.S. delegates to the brand-new United Nations. Senator Vandenberg has always been considered the “patron saint” of the Council. \nNote on Parking \nThe event will take place at the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. Guest parking is free and plentiful next to the visitor’s entrance. \n  \nTickets \nTickets available below. Individual tickets cost $175 and sponsored tables of 8 cost $2\,500. \n

SUMMARY:American Foreign Policy at a Crossroads with Emma Ashford
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Emma Ashford\, senior fellow\, Stimson Center. \nAmerican foreign policy under President Donald Trump’s first term was characterized by a dramatic shift in rhetoric\, but was not nearly so distinct in practice\, as his administration found itself stymied by a lack of experience and widespread opposition to change in foreign policy in Washington. Yet Trump’s rhetoric from his first term – emphasizing national interests\, economic security\, and the importance of burden-shifting to allies – has remained remarkably consistent since that time. New appointees and even congressional Republicans appear far more aligned with his “America First” vision\, suggesting the potential for significant change in U.S. foreign policy towards both allies and adversaries during Trump’s second term. Emma Ashford will share insights on what to expect during the new administration and the development of a new\, more nationalistic Republican foreign policy consensus. \nA reception for this event will take place from 5 – 6pm. Join us and meet other community members interested in the world. \nLocation and Parking \nThe program will take place at the Gerald R. SUMMARY:U.S.-India Relations: New Phase\, Same Drivers with Richard M. Rossow
DESCRIPTION:  \nWe welcome Richard Rossow\, senior advisor\, CSIS. \nBuilding relations with India has found support by both Republican and Democratic presidents for over 20 years. However\, each leader has put their unique emphasis on different parts of the relationship. As both countries continue to deepen their ties\, India is likely to play an even more significant role in shaping global security\, trade\, and political dynamics in the coming decades. The U.S. views India not only as a regional partner but also as a key global player in addressing many of the 21st century’s most pressing challenges. Mr. Rossow will lay out some of the key policy drivers of the leaders of both nations\, where these drivers overlap\, and where they diverge. \nA reception for this event will take place from 5 – 6pm.
